Paris, 31 March 2022 – This afternoon, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) jointly adopted their compromise report on the proposed recast of Regulation (EU) 2015/847 (the so-called “TFR”), which extends the requirements for fund transfers to crypto-assets. The version of the text adopted ratifies – perhaps without knowing it – the Parliament’s desire to deprive Europe of this innovation.
In recent weeks, digital assets have been highlighted for their use in the war following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On the one hand, they have helped to quickly raise over a hundred million dollars in relief for Ukraine, helped support local populations on both sides of the conflict, and raised questions about whether Russia should use them to circumvent economic sanctions against it. In this article, Adan sets out to answer this legitimate question and decipher why crypto-assets are not an effective tool in circumventing economic sanctions.
Paris, 15 March 2022 – Yesterday, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) adopted its negotiating position on the MiCA (Markets in Crypto-assets) draft regulation published in September 2020 by the European Commission. A significant step in building this European Union’s regulatory framework, bringing us closer to the final text that will structure the French and European crypto-asset industry in the coming years.
